A lifestyle versus cramming

I think we have all been in a situation where we have needed to cram for an exam or prepare a presentation, but is this a good habit to be reinforced and repeated? I just finished a biography about Vince Lombardi and realized that his theme for success was repeated throughout his day, weeks, months and life. He has often be given a bad name as the author suggests because one too many youth coaches has "motivated" using popular Lombardi-ism's. "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." is probably the one quote that search engines will gravitate towards. I can see how this can be misleading to someone who hasn't read up on Lombardi. By the completion of the book the author does a great job interpreting Lombardi's' legacy. Roughly stated, it is not winning at all costs, rather the pursuit of perfection, practice perfect, study perfect, live the best life you can in accordance with your religion, practice being a perfect parent, strive for perfection in all facets of your life. Lombardi knew that no one person was perfect or else he would have never coined the phrase, "The is no shame in getting knocked down, but there is no excuse for not getting back up." He wasn't just talking about football, it was life. It was the creed for his life which lead to many of his life's success'. Now I hope that I can inspire our student-athletes, alumni, family and friends to follow that pursuit.

A New Year and a new chapter

2010 will bring a bout a lot of change for IIT running. Some of it will be good, and inevitable some will not. People do not look forward to change nor do they like change. Whether it be in their day-to-day routines or a new brand of running shoes. We are, after all creatures of habit. Maybe that is why every Janurary first we strive for new resolutions, to improve our routines and accept those things about our routines that we cannot.

I for example, am trying a new media....a blog to reach out to alumni, parents, friends and recruits so that it is easier to find information regarding what is new with Illinois Tech running.
